2009 SWAP Service Trip Harlan, Kentucky June 21-27, 2009
"How does God's love abide in anyone who has the world's goods and yet refuses to help? Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action." 1 John 3:17-18
On June 21, 2009, approximately 25 people will leave early in the morning from Blooming Glen Mennonite Church destined for the mountains of Southeastern Kentucky. After a 14 hour drive, they will begin a week of serving the people of Appalachia with an organization called SWAP. The week will consist of hours of hard work in the hot, humid conditions of the area, as well as intentional time to form relationships with the people they will be helping and with other SWAP volunteers. Participants often find themselves on an emotional roller coaster as they experience the joys of new relationships and serving the Lord, while also witnessing first-hand the effects of severe poverty. By weeks end, most will find themselves transformed in ways they didn’t think possible.
The cost for this year’s trip is $300 per person. This money is divided, so that half ($150) goes to food, lodging and administration while the remaining half ($150) goes directly toward materials for the site the volunteer is assigned. Transportation costs are covered by Blooming Glen Mennonite Church.
You can help! While a week of work in the hot sun is not for everyone, there is an opportunity to contribute to this worthy program. Below is a list of several ways to get involved:
- Attend the trip: You do not have to be a member of Blooming Glen Mennonite to go to Kentucky.
- Contribute to SWAP
- Sponsor a participant
- Donate tools or materials
- Become a prayer partner
If you are interested in contributing in any way, please contact the church office for more information.
